Walter Plumb was born in Fordham (Newmarket Q3-1890 3B:511), son of William and Jane PLUMB (née PRYKE).
1891 census...Aged 8 months, he was at Lark Hall Farm Cottages, Fordham with his father William PLUMB [30] farm labourer, born Soham; his mother Jane [28]; brothers James W. [8], Henry [7], Herbert [4] and Arthur [3] and sister Louisa [6]. All except his father were born in Fordham. 1901 census...Aged 11, he was at Lark Hall, Fordham with his parents (father now foreman); brothers Herbert [milkman on farm), Arthur, Percy [8] and Albert [3] both born in Fordham. 1911 census...Aged 20, he was cowman at Farfield Farm, High Catton, Stamford Bridge, Yorkshire with Arthur and Lilian CARR. His parents, brothers Herbert,Percy and Albert and sister Edith [9] born Fordham, were at Carter Street, Fordham. All the siblings still survived. In Pocklington, Yorkshire in 1914 he married Annie COOPER [1-4-1890] . Their daughter Dorothy Vera was born in Pocklington on 4-3-1915. He enlisted in Pocklington, Yorks. CWGC record cards show he was attached to the 22nd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (3rd Tyneside Scottish).
According to the battalion war diary the 7th Battalion were relieved in the trenches on 5th August by the 9th Royal Irish Rifles and marched to billets near Meteren. From there they went to Bailleul and then via Candas to billets in Mirvaux on 16th August. From 18th to 31st August they were in camp near Henencourt Wood, carrying out Battalion and Brigade training. This is a considerable distance from where Walter is buried and as the CWGC have him attached to the 22nd, perhaps a draft from the 7th were sent to reinforce the 22nd Battalion. Neither battalion was involved in any large action that week. Without his Army records there is no way of knowing whether illness or accident ended Walter's life.
